Monday, August 27
Today we completed bellwork: Factoring and finding the GCF for 64 & 16 and 32 & 24.
Next we split the class up based on the Friday Check scores. If the students scored 7/10 or above then they worked on an enrichment activity in small groups.
While the those students work on their enrichment activity, the other students that scored a 6/10 or below, work with Mrs. Graff on a reteaching activity and then completed a Friday Check Retake to improve their scores.
There was not homework for all students, some students that were struggling with listing factors asked what they could do to work on that skill, so I told them to practice listing factors and to work on their multiplication facts.
Here are some numbers they can factor: 52, 144, 28, 48, 81

GRADES
Grades are posted on Infinite Campus and are up to date for the first two weeks of school. Parents/Guardians, if you haven't signed up for parent portal you really should! You will need to come into school and get a password and log-in ID. Having the parent portal will give you access to all your children's grades, and a head ups on assignments.
With this said, I will update all grades on Tuesday evenings. The Friday Checks for 8-24-12 are not what I would like to see of the students. If students did not score a 7 or above, they MUST retake this Check on Monday after reteaching activity with Mrs. Graff. If students that did score a 7 or above also have a choice to retake the Check, as well.
Any questions or concerns, feel free to email me!

Today we continued with Factoring practice and finding the GCF of any two given numbers.
Also, we completed a Friday Check. If you did not do well on the Friday Check you will have time to work with me on Monday for some re-teaching and have an opportunity to retake the Friday Check. If you did not get above a 7 out of 10 you must retake the Check on Monday.
Thanks for all the hard work this week with Factoring, Divisibility Rules, and GCF! We will be continuing with Unit 1 next week and looking at LCM. Look for a Unit test in after LABOR DAY!!

Thursday, August 23
Today we continued Factoring using the Rainbow Method. We used this method and the divisibility rules to list all factors for any given number.
Once we have a list of factors for any two numbers we can identify their greatest common factor or GCF.
Notes from today:

Wednesday, August 22 * with Video
Today we continued practice with factoring and Prime Factorization.
If you were absent here are the notes and pratice Rainbow Factoring we completed in class.
Then we completed an Exit Slip for factoring 81
There was also Homework tonight! Complete 3 Rainbow Factoring; remember the list of factors is the solution not the rainbow, so you will need to re-write the list of factors!

Today was a very busy day!
We continued reviewing Divisibility Rules from bellwork.
I assigned homework for Divisibility Rules as well. The students each have a copy of the homework and a copy of the Divisibility Rules. These rules can also be found on the websites I posted on Friday, August 17.
Today's Homework:
Then we began discussing Rainbow method from Factoring, which we will continue tomorrow and Thursday.
Finally we finished the class period with an Automaticity Test. We will also complete one of these tests on Thursday.

What a great 1st back, and a way to start off Week 2!
I am very proud of all of you, today!
I was so impressed with the prime factorization that I saw today.
We started with three numbers for bellwork and you needed to list ALL the numbers it was divisible by
for example: 54,064 is divisible by 2, 4, & 8.
Then we jumped in on the Factoring of products and took notes in our Math Modeling Binders.
- First we identified factors and products.
- Then we defined Prime and Composite Numbers.
- Next we went through the steps for Prime Factorization
- After we completed a factor tree as a class we discussed and defined Prime Factorization.
- We did another practice, and students completed an Exit Slip for the Prime Factorization of 24.
Tomorrow we will look at the solution to this Exit Slip, along with some of my Favorite Wrongs!! I love when students give me "Teachable Moments"!!
Did you know that we learn more from our mistakes then when we do something right the first time????
As we did today, we will continue to cover Divisibility Rules for bellwork, and I would like for you to be practicing these at home. So look for homework tomorrow :-)

Week of August 20
This week will be diving into our first unit and beginning our steps for Automaticity. Although automaticity will not officiall begin until the week of Sept 3, we will be completing testing for collecting data.
Here is what we have planned for the week:
Monday:
Review Divisibility Rules & begin Factoring with Factor Trees.
Preview vocabulary for Unit 1
Tuesday:
Continue Factoring
Introduce Great Common Factors (GCF)
Automaticity Test 1
Wednesday:
Factoring activity
More practice with GCF
Vocablary Matching Activity
Thursday:
Depending on how students preform on factoring and GCF we may continue with LCM or we may continue factoring and GCF
Listing multiples of a pair of numbers to find the Least Common Multiple (LCM)
Automaticity Test 2
Friday:
Friday Check
-Factor Trees
-GFC
-LCM (if covered)
Enrichment for passing checks, and remediation for students that need more work on this weeks material.

Friday, August 17
Today we began with bellwork.
Students were asked to identify the divisibility rules that they could apply to 564. They determined 2, 3, 4, & 6 could all apply.
We then continued practice on the divisibililty rules. Here are a few links to help with these:
http://math.about.com/library/bldivide.htm
http://www.mathsisfun.com/divisibility-rules.html
Finally, we took our first Friday Check. A Friday Check is a short class assignment, today's was 5 questions, similar to a quiz. They will be given every Friday and will be worth 10 points. The Friday Checks cover all targets from the week.
Have a great weekend!

Week of August 13
So far this week we have continued school wide expectations and classroom expectations.
Monday We have taken a multiplication retest and I will send it home Friday for the students to use and make corrections. The areas that are weak for students need to be strenghtened. It is our goal to have those facts mastered by December.

Tuesday we took a pretest for Unit 1: Prime Time. With in this unit we will learn about prime and composit number, Least Common Multiple (LCM), and Greatest Common Factors. It is VERY IMPORTANT, that students know all multiplication facts for this unit!
Wedneday We introduced Divisibility Rules with a power point, and a student handout, then we completed centers about the divisiblity rules.

Welcome All Hotshots!!!
I am very excited to get started with the 2012-2013 school year! Tonight was the 6th grade orientation and many of you discovered that we may have met a couple of years ago, while I was a substitute teacher at many of your elementary schools. I was very happy to see so many new and familiar faces!
As we begin the year, I want all students, parents, and guardians to know this blog will be a very helpful source for you to get all class information on a weekly and daily bases. If you are absent at anytime you can look at the blog in the evening or when you return to school and get your assignment. I will also post tutorial videos to help with explanations and extra practice. In addition to the tutorial and blog posts, I will offer a few mornings for additional practice and tutoring. Once I receive a schedule of my morning duties at school I will post the days and times I will be available.
I am asking that students bring in the following materials by August 17:
